August 28, 1922 - Father is building a little movie theatre...on Whittier Blvd

In this letter, Edythe mentions hearing news from her sister in Los Angeles that their Father is building a movie theatre on Whittier Boulevard. The only one I find near their new home that was being built at that time was called the Red Mill Theater, later known as the Boulevard Theater, at 4549 E. Whittier Blvd. The theater has undergone several remodels since it was originally constructed in 1922 and opened in 1923.

Dearest Rayson:

After you had gone last night I walked down town and caught the eight oclock car home. Mother and I sat and talked a while then went to bed.

Mother is better today dear, she seems more like herself again. Just a case of feeling blue over having to leave the old home, and in a way I cannot blame her. Yet she may have a nicer one out west later on, who knows.

We have been very busy today getting things started. To begin with, we put an advertisement in the paper then we went to the garage and put all of Father's tools together. After that we started on the cellar and brought everything to light worth selling. That is a good job done because the rest will be easy.

Aunt Vic and Ryburn came this afternoon to get some paint Mother had for her. Ryburn didn't stay of course, we are not common pastime for him. Aunt Vic feels so badly when she thinks of our going. She feels that she cannot afford to go but I think we almost have her talked into going anyway.

We had a long letter from Vera this morning but she didn't have much news. Billy stayed down town one night after work and went to lodge with his boss, Mr. Kirkpatrick. Father is building a little movie theatre about two blocks east of us on Whittier B'lv'd. They are all well and having a good time. That will keep Vera from being so lonesome. She said in the letter for us all to hurry and come, she wants to go to town. There is no one to drive the Ford when Billy is working.

They have several different kinds of flowers started and Father is planting grass seed. By the time we get there everything will look fine.

Mrs Yost came over this evening to see what we had decided about shipping furniture and didn't seem so very dissappointed to learn that we were not taking any, in fact she said they had already sold several pieces of their household goods. They allways come at things in such a round about way.

Chautauqua closes tonight and that will end the camping there as the buildings are to be torn down. Next year the Chautauqua will be held in a large tent down here in Allan Park. It is too bad, that was such a nice place for campers. Isn't it strange that a good clean amusement like that, people do not seem to take any interest in. I should like to have gone one day at least but was really to busy to go.

Well dearest lover, it is getting rather late and as there is no news, will say good night for this time. With all my love and Mother's too, I remain as ever, yours as allways,
Lovingly,
Edythe.
